Seren Vell's Workshop

A cartographer's workshop where roads, boundaries, and missing places are carefully recorded.

Description

Seren Vell's workshop stands near the edge of Briar Hollow, where the houses begin to thin and the road becomes more grass than dirt.

The building is made from stone, dark timber, and several additions constructed at different times. Its roof slopes unevenly. One window is circular, another has been bricked over, and a leaning ash tree stretches above the workshop.

Wind chimes made from old keys and bent measuring tools hang over the entrance.

A carved sign above the door reads:

S. Vell, Cartographer

Beneath it, in smaller letters:

Boundaries, Roads, Inheritance Lines, Missing Acres, Honest Distances

Interior

The workshop is crowded with maps, books, measuring instruments, rolled parchment, notebooks, and unfinished projects.

Nearly every wall is covered with charts or pinned notes. Tables hold compasses, rulers, ink bottles, lenses, brass instruments, and objects whose purpose is not immediately obvious.

The room appears disorganized, but Seren seems to know where everything belongs.

Notable Features

Main Workroom

The main workroom contains Seren's largest table, usually buried beneath maps and notes.

A kettle, several lamps, and a collection of mismatched chairs make the space feel more lived-in than professional.

Map Archive

Shelves and cabinets hold maps of Briar Hollow, Thornreach Crossing, nearby roads, property boundaries, and more distant regions.

Some maps have been heavily corrected. Others contain handwritten questions along their edges.

Instrument Table

A smaller table is dedicated to cartographic tools, including:

  • Compasses
  • Measuring chains
  • Brass dividers
  • Surveying rods
  • Magnifying lenses
  • Ink-stained rulers
  • Several unfinished devices

Storage Loft

A narrow ladder leads to a loft filled with old records, broken equipment, rolled maps, and boxes Seren has not opened in years.

Seren Vell

Seren Vell is the workshop's owner and Briar Hollow's resident cartographer.

He creates maps, surveys land, records roads, and investigates inconsistencies that others might dismiss as mistakes.

Seren is knowledgeable and helpful, although he is often distracted by whatever problem currently occupies his attention.

Recent Events

The workshop has recently been the site of unusual activity.

Maps and instruments were disturbed, several objects were damaged, and Seren's research appears to have attracted more attention than he intended.

Despite the disruption, the workshop remains in use.
