Step 1: Choose the Route
The group chooses a known road, local path, direct approach, or uncertain route.
A route may be:
- Present — it has been observed.
- Passable — it can physically be traveled.
- Stable — it remains consistent.
- Recommended — it is appropriate for ordinary travelers.
These classifications are not interchangeable.
Step 2: Choose Travel Pace
A slower pace supports observation, foraging, and careful navigation. A normal pace balances time and caution. A fast pace sacrifices detail and increases the chance of overlooking warnings.
Step 3: Establish Roles
Useful roles include navigator, lookout, quartermaster, forager, archivist, and instability observer.
Step 4: Resolve the Route
Failures should create complications, costs, discoveries, altered routes, or meaningful choices rather than simply preventing travel.
