Language of Eryndor

Common

The shared language of trade, politics, and everyday life.

Overview

Common is the most widely shared spoken language in Eryndor. Merchants, travelers, officials, adventurers, and city residents use it when no more specific language is shared. It is practical rather than ceremonial, but its flexibility allows it to carry everything from market gossip to legal debate.

Performance note: The real-world analog is a reference for cadence, sound, and creative direction. It is not intended as a direct one-to-one translation of a real culture or language.

Sound and Cadence

Common has no single approved accent. Coastal communities tend to stretch vowels, inland speakers clip them, and guild-trained speakers often favor careful, standardized pronunciation. A speaker’s word choice usually reveals more than their accent.

Writing and Inscription

Common is written in a broad, adaptable alphabet used for notices, correspondence, contracts, journals, and road signs. Handwriting ranges from ornate court script to cramped merchant shorthand.

Common Uses

  • Trade and bargaining
  • Politics and civic life
  • Everyday communication

Roleplaying the Language

Use your natural speaking voice, then add regional habits rather than forcing a theatrical accent.
